The one thing that SiteScape didn’t have at launch was an obvious business model. E57 file formats (and soon RCP) and brought into CAD, BIM, point cloud or collaboration software such as Revit, AutoCAD, Archicad, Sketchup, Navisworks, Recap, CloudCompare, Revizto and many others. Once captured, scans can be exported to the. It raises the question: why use an expensive laser scanner or handheld SLAM, or make do with pen and paper, when you can use a commodity device to capture certain aspects of a site very quickly? The software was designed to make LiDAR more accessible to architecture, engineering and construction professionals. In December 2020 we saw the launch of SiteScape, a free iOS app that offers 3D scanning to anyone with a LiDAR-equipped iPhone or iPad. Not surprisingly, it didn’t take long for the AEC industry to jump on board. To someone who grew up with rotary dialling and tangled cords this modern incarnation of the ‘phone’ is frankly mind blowing. With a built in LiDAR sensor, the ‘Pro’ models can now be used to scan a space, generating point clouds with millions of points. Last year the iPhone got another string to its bow. Now we can capture every single moment of our lives, rather than just those special occasions usually reserved for our bulky cameras. It also completely changed the way we take photos. It’s a personal assistant, video player, games console, shopping portal and sat nav among many other things. It’s sometimes easy to forget that the iPhone is only 14 years old, and its role as a ‘phone’ has now become secondary to all the other things it can do. We would welcome an opportunity to discuss further - please contact us at and reference your App Store review. How can a commodity mobile device like the iPhone or iPad be used to capture reality on the construction site? Greg Corke caught up with LiDAR scanning software developer SiteScape to find out more We'd also like to add that we in no way sell uploaded data to advertisers, and because we charge for Scan To CAD processing, we really have no incentive to do so. We charge $0.15 per sqft for that conversion to various CAD and BIM formats, but make the ability to scan (as well as export) free. What Canvas specializes in is making that 3D scan data useful for professionals in the home improvement industries - people who need to capture field conditions and measurements and use that data in CAD or BIM programs. It sounds like you may be looking for a general 3D room scanning app, and you're right that there are many apps that can generate a 3D scan, especially with LiDAR. Thank you for taking the time to review our app, even if you didn't have a good experience. Even if the info is properly handled, what stops this company from just selling that info to advertisers for a nice amount? Don’t be fooled by a gimmick. ![]() ![]() I’m guessing the steel sack it takes to then charge folks $0.15/ sq ft for these scans is so that the information can be adequately safeguarded and encrypted but I highly doubt that the case. You are forced to upload all of it and give it over to be stored and processed remotely for anything usable. GPS data, network information, any photos or family pictures hanging on the wall, a full blueprint of a space along with the location of all the valuables. ![]() The amount of information that can be harvested from scans like these is sickening. They also don’t require you to upload a customers private information to this company’s servers to “process”. Most don’t even need the LiDAR Scanner but simply benefit from having it. There are plenty of alternatives that offer the exact same functionality. That boost is ignored by this company forcing users to upload their scans for processing. That doesn’t mean anything when room scanning other than a boost in processing speed. You only get more resolution in a scan using it which allows for subjectively more accuracy. Literally any room scanning app can do what this one does. ![]()
